Drive Less, Save More

April 13th, 2013 by Brook

Drive Less, Save MoreHave you ever wondered how Portland became such a great cycling city? Look no further than the people, organizations and programs that are invested in building a rich community of cyclists through promoting cycling as an alternate means of transportation. Drive Less, Save More is one of those organizations, and they’re changing the face of our community.

Launched in 2006 by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Drive Less, Save More raises awareness about the practical, economic and environmental benefits of improving the way in which ODOT manages our transportation system. Reducing individual car trips is one of the main goal, and, bicycles are a big part of the solution, while public transit, carpooling and ride-sharing are emphasized as well.

Here’s the rundown from their website:

“Traffic congestion takes a heavy toll on residents, our economy and the environment. Oregon’s population is projected to grow exponentially, and traffic will only get worse unless action is taken.

Compounding the problem is the fact that there are insufficient funds to build new roads on a sizable scale. Part of the solution is to better manage the demand put on our transportation system and maximize its capacity. That’s the primary aim of Drive Less Save More.

Launched in 2006 by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Metro and its public and private partners, Drive Less Save More seeks to reduce individual car trips as an integral part of a larger solution to addressing traffic congestion. The goal is to raise public awareness about the benefits of driving less through trip chaining and other smart driving strategies, such as riding transit, carpooling, vanpooling, ridesharing, telecommuting, biking and/or walking. Today, Drive Less Save More has expanded beyond the Portland metro area into Salem, Eugene/Springfield, Medford and Bend.”

Meet the PPP Operations Team

March 28th, 2013 by Ken Wetherell
“Busiest lunch ever – 18 deliveries in 1.5 hours.”
That was the message Jenn sent to our co-owner team last month on a day when Portland Pedal Power served over 340 people at numerous downtown businesses on five bikes. Lots of coordination goes on behind the scene to pull this off. Food consistently arrives hot and on time, leaving hungry customers smiling. And we’re gearing up for more — building more Pyxis equipped Yuba Mundos, hiring riders and signing on more clients. It’s an exciting time of growth for us and a good time to introduce the talented people who make it happen every day. They ride, promote, deliver, advertise, dispatch, build, train, innovate, sell, maintain and serve. Meet the faces of Portland Pedal Power!
Jenn
Jennifer Dederich, Co-owner and Head of Operations
PPP would not exist today without Jenn. Full time since day one, she grabbed this project by the horns and wrestled it into submission and eventually into a smooth-running, productive business. Her passion for the business model and her drive for results, continuous improvement and customer delight have moved us further down the road for over four years, doubling our business volume every year. As I said on the first day we ever met — to discuss going into business together — she rocks!
Likes About the Job
“Providing superior service and making people really happy.”
Favorite Moment on the Job
“When everything just flows like butter. When it’s a busy day and it all works out great.”
Least Favorite Moment on the Job
“Weather. Super, super rainy days. Fighting Mother Nature.”

Nutcase Helmets: Nutcase is the brainchild of designer Michael Morrow, who saw a gap in the market for sports helmets and decided to focus on helping cyclists (and skaters, snowboarders and other outdoor sports fans) express their personality, views and allegiances while also protecting their heads. Kalé: The Ultimate Japanese Comfort Food

March 14th, 2013 by Brook

Kalé PDXAre you in the mood for some comfort food? Skip the typical unhealthy fried food this time and try Kalé.

Kalé, which is a simple spiced stew consisting of meat, onions, carrots, tomatoes, and other vegetables and served with rice, was first introduced in Japan in the late 1800’s. The popularity of the dish grew throughout the years, as it became a staple at well-known restaurants and was added to the official cookbooks of the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. Now, it’s so popular in Japan that it’s considered a national dish; one that the average person eats 86 times per year!

Five, Count ‘Em, Five PPP Bikes on the Road

March 2nd, 2013 by stacy

It is no secret that Portland Pedal Power is growing. More customers rely on us to bring them food, groceries, and other products. More restaurants, publications, food carts, and stores partner with us to deliver their wares. And more businesses sponsor our bikes to affirm their commitment to sustainability while spreading the word about what they do.

With all of this growth we need to keep building more of our Pyxis enclosures to keep up with the demand. And recently, we had a landmark day for PPP- we had enough orders to have five bikes and riders out on the streets of Portland at one time.

Why do we tout this achievement? Read the rest of this entry »

Aybla Mediterranean Grill

February 26th, 2013 by stacy

Aybla FalafelThis is the third in a series of interviews giving an in-depth look at the restaurants that your friendly Portland Pedal Power riders frequent as they dash around town making lunch deliveries. Check out the previous interviews with Aaron from Picnic House and Addy from Addy’s Sandwich Bar.

We recently caught up with Saied Samaiel, owner and head chef of Aybla Mediterranean Grill. Aybla first hit the Portland food cart scene with a cart at the SW 10th & Alder pod in 2004. Since then, Saied has expanded his business to include four food carts and a mobile food truck which are all supported by Aybla’s brand new commercial kitchen located in the inner Southeast. And if you don’t have time to go out for lunch, your friendly riders at Portland Pedal Power will deliver your delicious gyros and falafel right to your desk.

But don’t just take our word for it. Check out what Saied has to say about all of his amazing food, as well as the true pronunciation of Aybla and where the name comes from.
