Five, Count ‘Em, Five PPP Bikes on the Road

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

It is no secret that Portland Pedal Power is growing. More customers rely on us to bring them food, groceries, and other products. More restaurants, publications, food carts, and stores partner with us to deliver their wares. And more businesses sponsor our bikes to affirm their commitment to sustainability while spreading the word about what they do.

With all of this growth we need to keep building more of our Pyxis enclosures to keep up with the demand. And recently, we had a landmark day for PPP- we had enough orders to have five bikes and riders out on the streets of Portland at one time.

Why do we tout this achievement? (more…)

Guest Blog: Living City & Handmade Gardens

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Garden 1This is a guest blog written by Rachel Freifelder of Living City and Handmade Gardens. We connected with Rachel through Portland Society, a nonprofit business alliance of professional women who are passionate about bicycling in Portland.

It is mid-January and the weather has been truly wintry. The memories of the mild fall, the late frost-date, fade so quickly when freezing fog slicks the streets and fingertips burn with cold! The sunshine is, of course, a welcome tradeoff for the dip in temperatures. I linger in it this afternoon, admiring the thin, yellow light slanting over the brave, sturdy vegetables still thriving in the garden.

A Rider’s Perspective: Colin Wagner

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Working food delivery in Portland can give you a completely different perspective of this beautiful city, especially when you’re a rider for a bicycle delivery company such as Portland Pedal Power. One of the most crucial assets to our company are our riders. Rider, Colin Wagner, has played an integral role in the success of PPP and  our efforts to grow. Now take the time to read a little more on Colin’s view  and experience of the city as a rider for PPP.

“As a delivery cyclist, every day is a rife with adventure and unpredictability.   I’m learning that big cities are filled with beautiful little things. Portland is brimming with life and more variety than you could cram into the biggest box of chocolates. The breadth of Portland just makes for that much more variety in seeing or experiencing captivating little moments.

Since I bike through the heart of the city on a daily basis, I have an up-close and personal perspective on these little moments.  Sometimes I’ll have my route dialed in my head only to find myself on SW 5th Ave. blocked by police guarding an inmate transfer from the county jail to the protected transport truck. Standard fare here, yes, but for someone who grew up in a little farm/college town another big city flavor to enjoy.

Other times I’ll pick up food from one of our vendors and be able to ask how that barbeque last weekend went and, when I drop the food off, have a regular customer ask how I liked the Beirut show at Pioneer square. I pop in and out of so many peoples’ work lives each day that my work-day feels more like a chance mosaic of the bits and pieces of their days.

My favorite recent moment was this Monday when I was handing out Bowery Bagel samples to a tour group only to be invited to join in singing an impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday”. It’s little moments like these when I’m surrounded by strangers and joining in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” on a brisk, pre-Fall morning that I realize how real and awesome this city is. See you on the streets Portland. Stay weird.

In my free time I spend a lot of time swallowed in music.  I listen to it, I write it, I play it.  In a lot of ways I shape my life directly and indirectly around it, from grasping new perspectives and flavors of emotions while I listen at home to simply getting out to shows.”

Get Dinner at Your OFFICE Door for 20% off in August!

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Before I say anything, know this!  You may now order Dinner At Your Door through the Portland Pedal Power website, and for the month of August you will get it for 20% off! (10% from PPP and 10% from DYOD).

Sooooooo a few months back we wrote this amazing awesome piece about this incredible little company called Dinner At Your Door.  Those of you who have been riding the cool bike this whole time will remember the reference of coming home after a looong day of work, and really not having the energy to cook anything.  Of course you could always eat out, but then you always do that and it’s beginning to taste like cardboard and paper mache.

For those of you who just hopped on the cool bike and haven’t been riding very long, Dinner At Your Door is a company that cooks hearty, wholesome, home-cooked meals for the hard-working citizens of our fair city and will have them waiting for your front door! So when you’re dragging your feet and all you want to do is plop on the sofa and watch the epic conclusion of “the Bachelorette”, you won’t miss a moment of the man drama because someone cooked for you!  And better yet, there is no waste and no dishes.  Simply rinse, and put back in a bag for delivery to pick up the following trip.  So all the benefits of cooking, without the repercussions… like actually cooking.

Now that that’s said, what if I one upped our previous post by telling you that you can now order Dinner At Your Door directly from the Portland Pedal Power website and for the month of August we’re offering 20% off your meals.  Too much to handle?!  Take a deep a breath, slow down, and read it again.  Dinner At Your Door is now fully partnered with PPP to bring you great meals in a sustainable fashion, and get them to you in  time for you to enjoy once you get off work. You’ll still want to order ahead of time for your meals, but you put in the order, let us worry about getting you the food!

Margot Feves, owner of Dinner At Your Door says, “I am really excited about the partnership with PPP, what better way to get our meals delivered to busy professionals than by PPP.  Chef Lisa has been very busy creating new menu items and I am certain that our customers will love the convenience of an office delivery.”

Chef Lisa, Dinner At Your Door’s new Executive Chef, joins the team with culinary training from The Art Institute of Chicago and experience at Lucy’s Table, Sur La Table Culinary Program, and Buddha Bites.  Chef Lisa is also a  Certified BBQ Judge with the Pacific Northwest BBQ Association and  we are looking forward to introducing new recipes that she has found while partaking as a recipe tester for Leite’s Culinaria, a food and cooking blog.  Look for new twists to our current menu offerings as well as some deliciously new menu items!

Concordia Neighborhood Yard Sale and free PPP bicycle delivery!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Let’s talk yard sales!  Like ‘em?  Love ‘em?  We certainly do!  Yard sales are where you can find some of the absolute COOLEST stuff that you may not need, but you know you WANT!  Especially if you’re a hipster, then JACKPOT!  OR maybe you do actually need some stuff, like a bed or furniture, or fun nicknacks for ridiculously low prices because you just got a new studio/ 2 bedroom/ town home apartment and you need to furnish it and make it feel like home! Whatever your needs/ wants/ desires, you’ll be thrilled to learn that coming up the weekend of July 28th are the Concordia Neighborhood Yard Sales!  Throughout the entire neighborhood from NE Prescott to NE Lombard between 22nd and 42nd  you can find a plethora of items strategically placed on lawns and driveways in an attempt to draw you in and make you buy!  For an interactive map of yard sale locations click here.  <—-there.

Though this is a weekend long event (from the 27th to the 29th) the REAL yard sale day is Saturday July 28th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. where the Concordia Neighborhood Association (CNA) has hooked you up with free coffee from Trailhead Roasters, free popsicles from Icicle Tricycles for the kiddies (both old and young), and, here’s the kicker, FREE cargo bicycle delivery.  Portland Pedal Power has teamed up with Splendid Cycles’ Cargo Bikes and Spoketown Cargo to deliver any of your purchased yard sale items via Neighborhood Greenways to any place within the garage sale area (or within reason) for free! (of course tips are accepted!)  Check out the CNA Yard Sales flyer (posted above) for a map of different locations in the area where you can claim your free coffee, popsicles, and bicycle delivery !

Now sure, we understand that really oogling and purchasing really cool items that you never knew you needed may not be enough to draw you into this fun social neighborhood event.  So don’t forget that you can also take part in the on going Going St. Neighborhood Greenway Scavenger Hunt which will be running all week through Sunday.  If you don’t find the bicycle of your dreams at the yard sales, you could very well win a Trek commuter bike, as well as many other prizes when you participate!

So come through to the Concordia Neighborhood Yard Sale event this weekend and say hello to your friends at PPP!  There’s no way you will walk away empty handed!  So what is it that you’re looking for?  We kind of hope to find some legos and bicycle grap tassles!

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

If you’ve seen any of our riders lately, you may have noticed something different about them.  Perhaps you thought it was a new haircut.  Maybe you were thinking that our riders had shaved or done something new with their eyebrows.  Perhaps it was bike or the helmets they’re sporting.  Then it more than likely hit you like a train using presto logs from Back to the Future II.  ”Those jerseys are freakin’ sweet!”  That’s right faithful followers of the bicycle delivery warriors, Portland Pedal Power has new uniforms and they are sexy!

Rider Colin says – “comfortable, don’t know that you are wearing it until someone comments how sharp and professional you look’, plus they have convenient pocket for delivery slips.”

Rider Fitz says about the jerseys – “‘…shirts are very breathable. Love the feel and receive so many compliments”

These beautifully made, custom designed Canari jerseys are courtesy of, and sponsored by, Bicyclinghub.com!  You may have

You’ve seen them all around town.  Perhaps you’ve noticed them on your way to work.  Maybe you were taking a walk downtown.  You may have pulled up next to one on your bicycle and thought “man, wouldn’t that be convenient?!”  Well now you can own one yourself!  That’s right, Portland Pedal Power is selling our self-designed, custom made, unique bicycle enclosures that we use for food delivery, product delivery, and visually appealing marketing for our businesses.  We don’t mean the blue prints and designs either!  We mean the fully assembled enclosures right out of the shop! (Specs at the bottom)

Since putting our enclosures in service, they have been gaining more and more recognition not only through out Portland, but internationally as well.  There have been a flood of inquiries about the design, the specs, and whether or not we are selling these unique monsters of convenience and innovation.  We’ve finally decided to unleash the design out into the world.  The enclosure is designed to work with most cargo bicycles and can easily carry loads as heavy as a cargo bicycle’s maximum capacity. Boasting a combination of a spacious interior and the ability to post large, eye-catching signs on the exterior, these enclosures are a great purchase for any business aiming for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly business model as well as a way to promote their own business visually using grass roots marketing techniques.

A little bit of history about the enclosures, these enclosures were designed by PPP founder Ken Wetherell and were really thestarting point for Portland Pedal Power.  Portland Pedal Power was born out of People’s Food Co-op in 1997, where Ken was once a volunteer at the produce stand.  At the time that Ken was volunteering at the co-op there began talks of expanding the store due to high sales, but not everybody was on board with the idea.  So Ken began to brainstorm with the head produce buyer and thought to create a bicycle delivery service for the co-op where people can order their food and have it delivered to them.  So 3 of the staff members of the co-op did a pilot program in Fall of ’97 and received tremendous support.  Unfortunately they couldn’t have too many customers due to bicycle capacity, but regardless the support was there and abundant.  As Ken decided to take this program to the heart of the Portland, he wanted to bring bicycle-based delivery to small companies as a way to promote the company’s services.  He had the idea to use a trailer to carry deliveries, and as time had passed, that trailer morphed into the bicycle enclosures we see today.
