Happy Sparrow – Bringing the Kolache to the NW!

happysparrow1If there’s anything we love more than delicious food at Portland Pedal Power, it’s delicious unique food that you would struggle to find anywhere else. The kind of food that makes someone do a double take and say “Wow, where did you get THAT?”

That’s why we are very excited to be delivering for Happy Sparrow Café, who specialize in making the Kolache (kuhlah-chee)!

Now if you’re anything like me, you may have never heard of a kolache. But Happy Sparrow’s creations compete with bagels and donuts as the favorite breakfast meal in Texas. A pastry that competes with donuts? Color me surprised… and more than a little curious.

So what is a kolache?  According to Mary and Danny Quach, the owners of Happy Sparrow,  it’s a “sweet soft bun filled with yummy fillings, then baked to a beautiful golden delight.” Like many things in life, it’s the insides that count! (But take it from me, the outside is just as tasty!) This special pastry was brought over to the States by Czech immigrants, and once the locals in Texas got a taste, they couldn’t get enough.

Today, Mary and Danny continue the tradition of creating delicious Texas-Style Kolaches like the ones they enjoyed growing up in Houston and Austin. But now, they get to use some of the best local Northwest ingredients resulting in a fresh and delicious treat. You will find Tillamook Cheddar Cheese, Zenner’s sausages, locally crafted fruit preserves, all fitting inside a hand-rolled, lovingly made treat.

On our menu, you will find kolaches for the sweet tooth, savory kolaches for those looking for a hearty breakfast, and even mini kolaches for those just looking for a quick snack before work. No matter how you’re feeling, there’s a kolache to compliment the mood.

So what are you waiting for? Do yourself a favor: try a kolache, and change the way you look at breakfast!

Come have Some Breakfast on the Bridges with Bowery Bagels

PortlandPedalPowerBikeBridgeEverybody loves Breakfast. It’s the meal that sets the stage for the whole day, so you gotta make it count. But sometimes, you have to cut breakfast short if you have a long commute, which means your breakfast might consist of whatever you can grab on the go.

So come enjoy a good breakfast this Friday! May 29th kicks off the first Breakfast on the Bridges, a great service hosted by the Shift community.

On the last Friday of every month during the summer season, Shift hands out pastries coffee, fruit, and sometimes even biscuits and gravy to cycling commuters crossing the bridges. Instead of rushing to get across the bridge, this event gives you a chance to stop for a minute, enjoy some good food, and take in the scenery from one of Portlands many bridges. This Friday, May 29th, you will find them on Steel bridge(esplanade east side), Hawthorne bridge (westbound off ramp), and Burnside bridge(east end, westbound) starting at 7:15 AM.

Portland Pedal Power will be there, so come say hi! We will have some delicious baked goods from Bowery Bagels, paired with some of their fantastic Schmears. This way, you can leave for the office on time AND enjoy a delicious breakfast before headed over the bridge. A great Breakfast with a great view of PDX. Couldn’t be better!

Bite the Big Apple With Bowery Bagels!

photo_deliveryA New York style bagel: Right off the bat, you might think it would be pretty difficult to find such a baked good around here. After all, Portland can’t get much farther away from the Big Apple.

How could Portland, Oregon, found about as far west of New York as you can get (About 3,000 miles worth!), create such a classic symbol of the metropolis?

Never fear, skeptical bagel connoisseur, for a hero appears within our very city! Bowery Bagels is Portland’s premier New York style bagel bakery and sandwich shop. The hand rolled bagels are boiled and then baked, resulting in an authentic, lightly crisp, chewy bagel.

Their bagels are particularly delicious with any of  Bowerys house made cream cheese schmears: plain, smoked salmon, fresh herb, roasted vegetable, BOM.com (bacon-onion-mushroom), and several vegan options.

They offer breakfast bagel sandwiches in the morning, and a delicious selection of lunch sandwiches, made from scratch soups, and salads. All the meats, sausages and bacon, are roasted and cured in our kitchen.

Make sure you start your morning off right, or get yourself pumped for a second wind at the office: Get yourself something delicious from Bowery. We take care of the hard work, and all you have to do is meet up with us, grab your meal, and get a taste of New York. Our Bowery-toting bikes have got your back.
