Welcome Sassy Stephen!

23172120953_6d9aa939e9_bOur Brand Ambassador Rider Stephen Sines has just stepped up in his new role as Catering Lead. So, for those of you who order large lunches and event catering from us frequently, you’ll be treated to the special catering stylings of “Sassy Stephen” (his nickname round the office).

Over the last seven years, Portland Pedal Power has evolved from simple bike delivery service to large office lunch and event caterers. Stephen will be helping to advance our level of service further, ensuring your team is satisfied, from breakfast to lunch to happy hour.

Stephen will work with new and existing customers and corporate accounts to assess and meet standing order and catering needs. He says he is “looking forward to providing our customers with a variety of cuisine options they haven’t yet tried.”

About Stephen: he’s a Virgo that likes isolation tanks, trail running, kilts, gardening, frisbees, and generally hard-to-do things. With a background in physiology, holistic & sports nutrition, and biomechanics, he’s a Portland native who has never left and says he’ll be here for his last days too.

Welcome Stephen and drop him a line at [email protected].

It is often said that they best way to see the world is on a bike…well, here comes a film fest devoted to this unique two-wheeled perspective. Filmed by Bike is the best little homegrown film fest in Portland, a long running local treasure. What started in a micro-theater with a whopping 60 attendees in has grown to a global bike movement, accepting submissions from all over the world. This year marks the 14th year of the festival, only the second year in its new home at the Hollywood Theatre (previously at Clinton Street Theater).

The festival runs over three action packed days, between May 6-8. Don’t miss the kick-off New Belgium Street Party on Friday, May 6th at Velo Cult. The party always boasts an impressive array of performers, activities, and of course, New Belgium beer for all!

Don’t miss the street party Friday night!

Over the course of this busy weekend, there are pre-show speed raffles, filmmaker Q+A sessions, dance parties, Brewery Tour Bike Rides with the Filmmakers, workshops, and awards ceremonies. The films selected are from all over the world, from snowy mountain adventure films to urban riding comedies. No matter what your cycling speed, you are bound to leave the theater inspired to ride and explore more.  Check out the “Watch Page” where you can view previously submitted films and the awesome 2016 Festival Trailer.

Filmed by Bike started in 2003 as a small fundraiser for bike events and has since been supporting a burgeoning international community of bike-loving filmmakers. For communities that want to promote bike culture and get people riding, Filmed by Bike encourages folks to bring the festival to their towns. They’ve started a Bike Movie Nights Program to inspire events related to cycling and advocacy. It’s a ready-to-go festival in a box to share the love of cycling in a new and inspiring way.

We will be there and we hope you will too. Power to the pedal!

Top 5 Ways to Spark Creativity in Portland

There isn’t a better time than summer to step outside and expose yourself to art. We’re a city of creatives and now more than ever the city is buzzing with creative events and artistic enclaves. The best way to spark creativity is to get out and witness it in person. Take yourself out one of these summer days and get exposed. Here’s our top five favorite ways:

PPP team members being artful at the museum

Portland Art Museum (PAM): Located smack dab downtown on the park blocks, PAM is a quick hop and a skip for those who work and create downtown. It is the seventh oldest museum in the United States and the oldest in the Pacific Northwest. The Museum is internationally recognized for its permanent collection and ambitious special exhibitions. We recently took a daytime team outing to the museum, taking a moment away from deliveries and promotions to witness the dramatic Gods & Heroes Exhibit (and to take some silly photos inspired by the lush paintings and sculptures). Hot tip: The museum is now offering a Creative License for just $40 a year, which is a total steal. You can use it to access the Museum and the NW Film Center all year long. You’ll also get the inside scoop on programs, lectures, events, and opportunities. This is by far one of the best ways we can think to keep the creative fuel burning during the lazy summer months and into the more focused fall and winter days. On August 21st, the museum will host its first ever Monster Drawing Rally (MDR), a live drawing event and fundraiser featuring more than 75 Portland-based artists. Part performance, part laboratory, part art bazaar, the Monster Drawing Rally is a great opportunity to watch some of your favorite Portland artists create original drawings from a blank page. Inspiration strikes!

  2. Rooftop Cinema at NW Film Center: Experience great films under the stars in the warm evenings, films like Almodóvar’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (showing August 6th), as well as kitchy drive-in movies at Zidell Yards. The Film Center is currently in the middle of a Paul Thomas Anderson program called “The Art of Reinvention: Paul Thomas Anderson and His Influences.” The film center also hosts a variety of film festivals year round; next up is the Fresh Film NW, a festival celebrating young filmmakers. Getting a Creative License from PAM also gives you reduced tickets to the NW Film Center and it’s unique offerings.

Our bike out at First Thursdays in the Pearl.

First and Last Thursdays: First Thursdays are a monthly art event in the Pearl, well-known and well attended. Ambling in the Pearl in and out of the galleries is a sure fire way to spark the art bug. We’re usually out with our bikes, cruising the galleries and drinking free wine. The Last Thursdays on Alberta is definitely not-to-be-missed. A community grown event, Last Thursdays is a great place to view and buy local art, get activated to create, and listen to live music.

  4. Portland Opera: If you need more drama in your life and swelling emotions welling up in the center of your chest, visit the Portland Opera. Guaranteed to make you sigh heartily and make your eyes gleam. One of the more creative programs out there, the Portland Opera often re-imagines traditional Operatic styles, like the current offering The Elixir of Love.
  5. Literary Arts/Portland Arts and Lectures: Just as summer is waning, the Portland Arts and Lectures season begins, spewing inspiration all over the stage. In addition to live events that are broadcast statewide on OPB, this program connects renowned authors with readers and writers of all ages through classroom visits and writing workshops. The coming 31st season features some of the most influential writers at work today; novelists, journalists, essayists, and poets who have won the most prestigious awards in their profession. Influence your own scribbles with literary exposure. Full speed ahead!

Portland Pedal Power is Looking for Interns!

Calling all Portland Area students! Portland Pedal Power is looking for two summertime interns wanting to further their knowledge in the wonderful world of marketing and event planning! We’re looking for hard working individuals who value local, sustainable business practices. Of course, learning is a two way street, and we’re looking forward to finding out what you can teach us during your time here!

The first internship we’re planning is focused on marketing. We would like someone to look at our current marketing plan, help in our use of social media, set some long-term goals, and help us record some relevant data.

The second internship we’re planning is focused on events in the PDX area. We make a lot of appearances around the PDX area, and we’re interested in what else is out there! This project would analyze and record attendance at local Portland events, from the Rose Festival to the Naked Bike Ride.

A willingness to ride a bicycle is always a plus! Both internships will last for the duration of the summer(three to four months) and have a monthly face to face check-in. After the duration of the project, we’ll have a big celebration and the intern can give a presentation on their findings.

As someone who took advantage of this opportunity last year, I highly recommend you consider taking us up on the chance! I learned more during my 3-month internship than I ever did in a classroom, and its a great opportunity to learn from real-world situations.

Feel like learning a bit this summer? Visit the Oregon Entrepreneurial Network website for more information and sign-up for a chance to meet with us! We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
