Portland Pedal Power is now delivering food from the long running and much-loved food cart, A Taste of Greek. Dishing up great food and welcoming smiles, the owner Jota and his right-hand/manager/marketing strategist Rodrigo, have consistently been rated best gyro in town. Check it out: visitors and locals alike praise the 5-star Super Lamb Gyro like crazy on Yelp.

The secret is simple: the best quality ingredients prepared by hand and from scratch by two Brazilian guys with giant smiles. The friendly customer service is highly valued by regulars, so we recommend you stop by the next chance you get, or even better, have a Super Gyro delivered direct to your office. What better way to wow your coworkers than organizing the next office lunch with authentic and savory lamb gyros, crispy falafel, stuffed grapes leaves, and smoky baba ghannoug?

Greek food is always best in summer, something about the combination of flavorful meat or falafel topped with cool minty yogurt sauce, lemony hummus, and crisp salads.

Check out the menu online, our favorites include:

Gyros – The main event at A Taste of Greek, marinated chunks of lamb or chicken serviced in pita bread with tiziki sauce, onion, parsley, and loaded with fresh lettuce and tomatoes.

Chicken Plate – Grilled chicken with rice, greek salad, and tiziki sauce. Served with pita bread.

Baba Ghannoug w/pita – Grilled eggplant with garlic, lemon and tahini sauce. On of my favorites: smoky eggplant and lemon, so much yum.

Kafta Plate – Ground Lamb with rice, greek salad, and tiziki sauce. Served with pita bread.

Ready to treat yourself? Make sure you drop by our menu and see what strikes your fancy.

Taste the Mediterranean at Tangier!

There’s nothing like great Moroccan and Mediterranean food. Few genres of flavor offer the same kind of complex tastes and culture that comes with each meal. As luck would have it, Portland is home to some great locations where you can experience the fine edible art from the Mediterranean, and none compare to what Tangier creates in their kitchen!

Tangier is a warm and welcoming family restaurant conveniently located in downtown Portland, quite close to the waterfront. When you show up, you will likely notice Tangier has a casually elegant atmosphere, catering to the exquisitely prepared cuisine that will enhance any dining or celebration experience.

Tangier features an extensive menu, much of which is vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. Take a look at a few of the choices you will want to order from our website:

Vegetarian Mezza – Falafel, humus, tabouli, tatziki, spinach pie, zattar pizza, baba ghannouj & veggie grape leaves.

Tabouli Salad – Finely chopped fresh parsley mixed with mint, green onion, tomato, bulgar, lemon juice & olive oil.

Enjoy Great Middle Eastern Cuisine at Gonzo Falafel and Hummus!

Gonzo Falafel & Hummus CartA couple weeks ago the PPP team had the chance to visit Base Camp Brewery, a local destination that features a star-lit ceiling, great drinks like the Meridiwit, and a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. The place is amazing and one of the best parts, by far, was the food we were able to enjoy.

Enter stage right, Gonzo Falafel and Hummus, the people behind the amazing food you can find just outside Base Camp’s front door. I gave Gonzo a call and discovered a bit about what makes this place so great.

The name Gonzo, is a play on words with Garbanzo, one of the main ingredients in many of the dishes served at the place that The Oregonian rated one of the best new food carts in 2012. Tal, Gonzo’s founder, let on that there may have been a little inspiration from the Muppets as well. Upon his arrival in Portland after spending much of his early life in Israel, Tal found a lack of food that was distinct to the Middle East. Possessing a love for Middle Eastern cuisine, he decided to take an active role in changing that.

Hunker Down with Food & Drinks at Base Camp

Base Camp BrewingThe Portland Pedal Power team recently had the opportunity to visit Base Camp Brewery, and my, did we have a good time. Base Camp gave us a tour of their brewery and let us try some of their signature beers. We were pretty impressed by their digs.

The first thing we got to do was take a look at where the magic happens. Base Camp Brewery is very proud of its gravity fed system, as this allows less oxygen uptake from mash tun to the filling line. Base Camp walked us through the whole process, from the malting process to the heat exchange to adding yeast to the wort. A lot of effort, but completely worth it, we were assured.

Aybla Mediterranean Grill

Aybla FalafelThis is the third in a series of interviews giving an in-depth look at the restaurants that your friendly Portland Pedal Power riders frequent as they dash around town making lunch deliveries. Check out the previous interviews with Aaron from Picnic House and Addy from Addy’s Sandwich Bar.

We recently caught up with Saied Samaiel, owner and head chef of Aybla Mediterranean Grill. Aybla first hit the Portland food cart scene with a cart at the SW 10th & Alder pod in 2004. Since then, Saied has expanded his business to include four food carts and a mobile food truck which are all supported by Aybla’s brand new commercial kitchen located in the inner Southeast. And if you don’t have time to go out for lunch, your friendly riders at Portland Pedal Power will deliver your delicious gyros and falafel right to your desk.

But don’t just take our word for it. Check out what Saied has to say about all of his amazing food, as well as the true pronunciation of Aybla and where the name comes from.
