Kalé: The Ultimate Japanese Comfort Food in PDX

I’ll be honest, when I think “Japanese Food,” the first thing that comes to mind is sushi. But did you know sushi doesn’t come close to the most common food you would find in a Japanese home? Makoto Yoshino knew we were all missing out on one of the best meals Japan gets to enjoy, and set out to change that.

That’s why we are very happy to deliver for Kalé, a Portland Restaurant serving a traditional Japanese dish you are going to absolutely love! Check out their video to learn a little bit about Kalé:

Kalé is a Japanese comfort food, dating all the way back to the year 1863, where Hiizu Miyake discovered the dish during a trip to Europe. Because of this history, it has traditionally been considered a European dish. During the last 100 years, it has gained popularity in Japan that it is now considered a national dish, developing into many different forms.

Enjoy the best Eastern Cuisine from the Comfort of your Own Home

When you consider the bland, mundane food that was plaguing Europe during the dark ages, you can’t help but feel a twinge of remorse for the poor souls who didn’t know any better. It’s no wonder explorers traveled across half the world to find something more palatable.

Of course here in PDX, you don’t need to go on a lifelong expedition to find the best tastes of the world. Instead you can jump online, look at our wide variety of choices, and suddenly you’ve done what took Marco Polo over 20 years to do. Portland Pedal Power does the hard work, and you can stay at home in your footie pajamas. Imagine if Marco could see us now…

Check out a sample of what you can find on our dinner menu, and start planning what you’re going to enjoy tonight:

Kalé: The Ultimate Japanese Comfort Food

Kalé PDXAre you in the mood for some comfort food? Skip the typical unhealthy fried food this time and try Kalé.

Kalé, which is a simple spiced stew consisting of meat, onions, carrots, tomatoes, and other vegetables and served with rice, was first introduced in Japan in the late 1800’s. The popularity of the dish grew throughout the years, as it became a staple at well-known restaurants and was added to the official cookbooks of the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. Now, it’s so popular in Japan that it’s considered a national dish; one that the average person eats 86 times per year!

PPP brings you KALÉ comfort!

So in Portland we know food!  Being among the ranks of elite foodies in the nation we can boast knowledge about some of the best and least known foods out there.  When it comes to Japanese food though I think a lot of America is still pretty in the dark.  Oh sure we know about Sushi and the chicken or beef skewers, yakitori and yakiniku.  Some may even know about Japanese Ramen!  Well prepare for a true taste of Japanese delight.  From the Japanese household to your door, Portland Pedal Power is pleased to offer you food delivery of the ultimate Japanese comfort dish, Kalé.  Being an ex-gaijin myself, living and teaching English in the magical place I like to refer to as “Japan Wonderland” I ate and cooked about 3 things.  Only two of these things did I cook successfully.  One was prepackaged ramen (thank you college).  The other was this magnificent dish Kalé that I ate 4 nights out of the week.  So I would like to personally thank you, Makoto Yoshino, for bringing this culinary piece of Japan to the States!  Oh how I’ve missed it so!

To learn why Kalé is Japan’s ultimate comfort food and my personal favorite dish that I need in my life, read on and take a bite!
