‘Tis the Season for Two Wheels

PDX Bike Month LOGO_180x360pxlCycling season is coming, and it wouldn’t be springtime without a great many bike events. The Month of May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Cyclists. Celebrated across the nation since 1956, Bike Month is a chance to encourage folks to ride more and demonstrate how communities can benefit from cycling. The City of Portland has long supported Bike Month, organizing National Bike to School Day, Bike Breakfasts around town, Lunch and Learns, Sunday Parkways, the Portland Employers Bike Summit, and National Bike to Work Day, to name some of the main events.

To roll out the festivities in May, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is partnering with PPP and Pedal Bike Tours for a sweet Bike Month Kick-Off Party, on Friday, April 29 (4:30 to 7pm at Pedal Bike Tours). There will be a raffle for prizes, light refreshments, and ample bike parking provided. Raffle drawings will be held every half hour and you must be present to win.

19866734416_7f7396839d_zFor the first time, Multnomah County Libraries, Metro, and PBOT are partnering to give a free bike light to patrons and families who ride their bikes to any of the Multnomah County Library branches during May. Biking to the library after school or on the weekend is a great way to get the whole family active together and biking more. Patrons who participate in this books and bikes promotion can request one free light per person while supplies last.

Women BikeAs we posted earlier, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has moved their annual Bike More Challenge from September to May, so there will be tons of parties, organized rides, and events to encourage folks to #bikemore. At PPP, we firmly believe that communities that ride more are safer, healthier, and happier. Growing the cycling population in Portland is a win-win for everyone. We hope you’ll get involved this May, participate and get outside! You can also win lots of prizes by participating in the challenge. Everyone loves prizes!

Bike More Challenge – Coming Sooner!

Bike Commute Challenge
For the first year ever, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has moved their #BikeMore Challenge (previously in September) to correspond with National Bike Month (May). Formerly known as the Bike Commute Challenge, the event is back and better than ever. This year, every ride counts! This means that teams can count ALL trips maid during the month of May, not just commuter trips to work. Grocery store, BBQ, party ride? Count ’em up!

7f1cc31fb40aa777a04a79e67c73da59We are proud sponsors of this event and we always get super into it as a team. It is an awesome way for a bike business like ours to demonstrate the amount we ride, the miles we log, and to encourage others to join us.

How it works: During May, businesses will compete against each other to see who can get the most staff to ride a bike and log their trips. For 2016 they’re using a simple points model to allow workplaces to compete with each other across their size category. The points system has been carefully selected to ensure a fair and exciting competition, and to strongly encourage workplaces to engage new riders if they want to climb the leaderboard and secure victory!

An added bonus are the piles of prizes you can win just from participating online and logging your trips; prizes will be announced as the Challenge approaches. Also, once you’ve biked seven days in May you’ll unlock a 20% discount from Portland Design Works (PDW), bike ten days for a 15% off from Shower’s Pass. Also, participants who log just four days will get access to hundred of discounts and freebies from Chinook Book!

Women BikeIt’s easy: join your workplace team, ride, earn points, and win prizes, awards, and GLORY for your team! We hope you’ll register now and join us for the month of May! Bike more, bike better, and power to the pedal!

The Challenge Launch Party is Monday, May 2nd at three locations around town! All three take place at various Bike Gallery Locations (Hollywood, Beaverton, Clackamas), you’ll get Hopworks beer to guzzle and they’ll be raffling off a free bike tune-up.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) is a non-profit membership organization working to promote bicycling and improve bicycling conditions in Oregon. Since 1990, theBTA has worked in partnership with citizens, businesses, community groups, government agencies, and elected officials to create communities where people can meet their daily transportation needs on a bike.

Goldsprints at Velo Cult

Velo Cult GoldsprintsDo you have a need for speed? Do you crave competition? Do you love locally brewed beer?

If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, you should go to Velo Cult on Fridays at 7pm from February 8th through March 8th to take part in (or just sit back and enjoy watching) their First Annual Goldsprints!

Here’s your 15 second history lesson on Goldsprints: Starting as part of the 1999 Cycle Messenger World Championships, a Goldsprint is a racing competition between two riders on stationary bikes. The event was founded and named by Adrien Weber, a cyclist and brewery owner whose TurbinenBräu Brewery produces a beer called the Gold-Sprint.
