‘Tis the Season for Two Wheels

PDX Bike Month LOGO_180x360pxlCycling season is coming, and it wouldn’t be springtime without a great many bike events. The Month of May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Cyclists. Celebrated across the nation since 1956, Bike Month is a chance to encourage folks to ride more and demonstrate how communities can benefit from cycling. The City of Portland has long supported Bike Month, organizing National Bike to School Day, Bike Breakfasts around town, Lunch and Learns, Sunday Parkways, the Portland Employers Bike Summit, and National Bike to Work Day, to name some of the main events.

To roll out the festivities in May, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is partnering with PPP and Pedal Bike Tours for a sweet Bike Month Kick-Off Party, on Friday, April 29 (4:30 to 7pm at Pedal Bike Tours). There will be a raffle for prizes, light refreshments, and ample bike parking provided. Raffle drawings will be held every half hour and you must be present to win.

19866734416_7f7396839d_zFor the first time, Multnomah County Libraries, Metro, and PBOT are partnering to give a free bike light to patrons and families who ride their bikes to any of the Multnomah County Library branches during May. Biking to the library after school or on the weekend is a great way to get the whole family active together and biking more. Patrons who participate in this books and bikes promotion can request one free light per person while supplies last.

Women BikeAs we posted earlier, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has moved their annual Bike More Challenge from September to May, so there will be tons of parties, organized rides, and events to encourage folks to #bikemore. At PPP, we firmly believe that communities that ride more are safer, healthier, and happier. Growing the cycling population in Portland is a win-win for everyone. We hope you’ll get involved this May, participate and get outside! You can also win lots of prizes by participating in the challenge. Everyone loves prizes!

Ride the Parkways Before Summer is Spent

19866734416_7f7396839d_z

Sunday Parkways this Sunday!

Heya Portland, I know you’re over the heat, but one of the last Sunday Parkways is this weekend, so grab your bike and get rolling. The SE Parkways ride is one of the larger rides of this series, circulating around Laurelhurst, Colonel Summers, Sewallcrest and Ivon Parks. In all the parks along the way there are opportunities to stop and grab some yummy eats, listen to tunes, and you can even jump into a dance or activity or two.

Last summer I rode the SE Parkways ride and it was a lovely cruise through the neighborhoods with cute kids selling lemonade along the way, lots of free stuff from promo booths, and some of my favorite food carts cooking up eats. We’re lucky to live in a town committed to free community events like this one.

Find us for free stuff and #DriveHope

The ride takes place this Sunday the 23rd, from 11am to 4pm, and the total route is 7 miles. Have a look at the handy Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways route map. Then take a moment to check out what activities, musical acts, and fun events await you at the event by checking out the brochure.

Portland Pedal Power will be out with our big bikes this day promoting the #DriveHope campaign. Our partner Point West Credit Union is donating $5 dollars per hashtag (#DriveHope) to raise awareness for Metropolitan Family Service’s “Ways to Work” program, helping families get to work (with purchasing a car, refinancing, repairs). We will be encouraging folks to share what drives them while handing out free goodies along the way. Find us to help the cause and grab some swag!

Also, you can end the Sunday Parkways season big by exploring the new Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People and the Sellwood area on Sept 27th (11am-4pm – 7 miles). This new route will include the Tilikum Crossing and circle the Sellwood area introducing participants to the Westmoreland, Sellwood Parks plus Brooklyn School Park where music, food, and fun are waiting.

See you on the Parkways!

Maximize Your Weekend, PDX

Hope to see you this weekend at Sunday Parkways!

Summer in Portland means patios, rivers, bikes, and beer. It means: get busy and get outside. This weekend Portland Pedal Power will be out in maximum, cruising our big bikes round a handful of hot summer happenings. On Saturday we will be hitting the Saturday Market and the Oregon Brewer’s Festival riverside at Waterfront Park. You can easily do both on Saturday and still have time to hit the PSU Farmers Market to shop for dinner (if you’re not too sauced!).

On Sunday, we’ll be riding the Sunday Parkways NE route in style with our Point West bikes. Sunday Parkways is an excellent event for the family or a daytime date and you’ll score lots of free stuff from vendors along the way. We will be stopping occasionally to hand out sunglasses and blinky bike lights to spread the word about the #DriveHope Campaign. There’s always a good smattering of yummy food cart options too.

Get your golf on at the Portland Classic, coming up

Summer in Portland also means planning ahead. Weekends fill up quick! We will be cruising all these events to help promote the upcoming Cambia Portland Classic, the longest-running non-major tournament on the LPGA tour, returning to Columbia Edgewater Country Club August 13-16. This will be the 44th year that the LPGA has come to Portland, and it’s getting better every year.

Last year some of Portland’s most iconic food carts were added, including KOi Fusion and Retrolicious, returning this year. The Craft Beer center will also return this year, featuring some of the Northwest’s best microbrews. The tournament promises to feature many of the worlds best golfers.

This year they’ve added the Portland Classic Sprint to the Green 5K, a race on the golf course prior to the final round on Sunday, August 16. Tickets for the event are available online at portlandclassic.com. Weekly passes are $25 and daily tickets are $10, and children 17 and under are free. All ticket proceeds go to charity.

Get crackin’ Portland! Summer doesn’t last forever!

Opening the Roads with Sunday Parkways!

That’s right, folks! Sunday Parkways is coming back for 2014! I don’t think I have to tell you Portland Pedal Power gets excited when events like this come around. Anything that means less cars on the road and more bikes to take their place is a step in the right direction.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the event, the City of Portland opens up the city’s largest public space – its streets – to let you get around however you may like. You can walk, roll, hop, skip, jump, jive, pogo stick, and bicycle throughout the parkways, greeting neighbors, visiting your neighborhood haunts, and enjoying the clean air. According to the City of Portland’s website, it is the aim of Sunday Parkways to help everyone “discover active transportation while fostering civic pride, stimulating economic development, and represent the community, business, and government investments in Portland’s vitality, livability, and diversity.”

The Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030

Portland Bike LaneHave you ever wondered why Portland is such a great cycling city? Well, take a look at the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 and wonder no more! Adopted in February of 2010, the plan suggests that bicycling will be more attractive than driving by the year 2030 if advances are made in six key areas:

• Attracting new riders.
• Forming a denser bikeway network.
• Increasing bicycle parking.
• Expanding programs to support bicycling.
• Increasing funding for bicycle facilities.
• Strengthening bicycle policies.

Bike Portland : Looking forward to June!

So May is coming to a close and the first day of summer is rapidly approaching.  Well… the first day of summer is officially June 20th for us northern hemisphererers. Anyway, as our favorite (or least favorite depending on varying degrees of skin pigmentation) season is here, as are our 2 to 3 months of liberation from the oppressive rains.  So to celebrate the beginning of this dry(er) season, we at Portland Pedal Power decided to prepare you for June with some funtastic events for you to bike portland to while enjoying dry(er) weather.

Portland Rose Festival (June 1st – 3rd and 7th – 10th)

Our favorite annual city fair celebrating that which Portland is most well known for has begun (if you hadn’t noticed the fireworks or giant ferris wheel on the waterfront) and will be ongoing through to June 10th.  You may have missed the fireworks on May 25th but there are still plenty of rides, games, events, and attractions to see down on the waterfront whether you bike to or bike through!  Click here for more information on upcoming events without having to decipher the Rose Festival’s website.

Dates and Hours being:

May 31 – June 1: 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

June 2 – June 3: 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

June 7 – June 8: 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

June 9 – June 10: 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Portland Beer Week (June 7th – 17th)

Being some of the most profound beer drinkers of our day and age, local brewers: Apex, Deschutes, and Columbia Distributing present Portland Beer Week.  This week is not just a celebration of Portland’s amazing beer, but the amazing people and culture surrounding the city and our free spirited attitude that keeps alive the dreams of the 90s.  This festival isn’t just about drinking and enjoying beer, but educating people about the finer points of beer drinking such as: how to taste and evaluate beer, pairing the proper foods with beer, barrel aging beer, and much more.  Hey, France does wine, we do beer!  For more information and a schedule of events check out PDX Beer Week’s website.

North Portland Sunday Parkways (June 24th)

Sunday Parkways is held by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.  This event is an opportunity for locals to get out and experience Portland’s beautiful parks, physical healthy activity, games, sun, and fun all while promoting Portland’s ever so famous “Greenways.”  Greenways are our vast network of bicycle lanes running throughout the city making bicycling safer for everyone on the road.  The parks covered for June in North Portland are Peninsula, Arbor Lodge, Kenton, and McCoy Parks.  Don’t worry if you can’t make this one, they have a Sunday Parkways event every month through to September.

Portland Pedalpalooza (June 7 – June 30)

So essentially the entire month of June is Portland’s Pedalpalooza!  I’m sure you’ll be seeing more from us about this monumental event.  For a short version, Pedalpalooza is 3+weeks of over 251 (and counting) events revolving around “bikey fun.”  As we always do in Portland, this event is going to be kicked off with a ride on June 7th at 6pm followed by bikey party time nary an hour after.  Throughout the month of June, if you’re not on a bicycle then you’re 1) missing out, 2) totally uncool, 3) going to be very irritated at all the fun we’re having!  So if you don’t own a bicycle, I highly recommend Craig’s list!

Free Movies (All Month!)

So I know Portland loves an oldie but goodie in every sense of the phrase.  Well all around Portland you can find free movies for various nights!  For information on where to find what venues play free movies on which nights check out PDX Pipeline!  You can likely find anything from Ghostbusters to Encounters at the End of the World to Milk.  Whatever your taste, I’m sure there is something for you to kick back with a beer and enjoy.

So enjoy June all you weather crazed cyclomaniacs!  We’ll catch you on the streets!
