Mobo HelmetAs we dive further into fall, we start to see less and less of the sun. Not only does it hide behind the clouds for most of the day, but it also seems to go down earlier and come up later. What gives, Sun? Did we say something wrong?

We all know when we’re on the road, visibility is a big deal. That gets harder to do when the sun gives us the cold shoulder for nine months of the year. That’s why I wanted to show you a couple of interesting bike helmets equipped with built in lights.

The Mobo LED Helmet has a fiber optic ring of lights which circles the helmet and a set of LED lights on the back, making sure everyone on the road knows exactly where you are. This helmet comes in four color choices: black, pink, grey/white and red/white.

The Mobo helmet isn’t the only one that has added some lighting to headgear. Take a look at this “Smart” helmet that was made for the Citi Bike program in New York City. The helmet is equipped with multicolored LEDs and a GPS system meant to help you find other rental bike stations, sponsored by Citi Bank. The best part is this website offers step by step instructions on how to make your own version of the helmet.

And of course, if you want to go all out there’s always the LumaHelm, a helmet being developed by Exertion Games Labs. As you will see in the video, this helmet uses LEDs to display information to everyone around you. This means it could be used as a turn signal, brake lights, or anything you might want to say to the people you’re sharing the road with.

While these customized helmets are pretty rad, it’s important to remember part of what makes the typical bike helmet so safe is its smooth surface. But if you do happen to add something unique to your helmet for visibility, we would love to see! Show us what you’ve made on Twitter at @pdxpedpow or on our Facebook page. We would love to see how creative you are!
