Pacific Pie Company

Sweet AND savory. Yum!

Pacific Pie Company (PPC) is a special partner to Portland Pedal Power. I say that for two reasons. First, they are located in SE Portland, which is where we PPP co-owners met each other for the first time to form the business. Second, PPC is the first and only PPP partner in SE Portland, which is not even in PPP’s official delivery zones (YET)!.  But those pies are so tasty, it just made a lot of sense to offer delivery services to our mutual customers.  The message for those of who have never had a pie from PPC is this: order at least two!  That’s because they bake sweet pies and meat pies (and veggie). Of course, you’ll want one for the main course and one for dessert! Be sure to visit Pacific Pie Company’s website to see more photos and a fun video of Sarah in full pie-baking mode.

The story of the Pacific Pie Company

Pacific Pie Company was started because Australian born Chris Powell was hungry. After moving to the States from Australia in 2008, Chris couldn’t believe that he couldn’t find a decent savory pie – the iconic Aussie food – in America.  After bugging his wife, Sarah Curtis-Fawley, about missing meat pies for months, Sarah rolled up her sleeves, researched pie recipes, and started baking meat pies in their home kitchen. Friends and family loved Sarah’s pies, and Chris and Sarah decided to move to Portland to join the amazing food scene and launch a business specializing in savory Aussie style pies, pasties, and sausage rolls.

Holy cow that looks good

After a successful first season at local farmer’s markets in 2009, Sarah and Chris opened a small cafe on SE Ankeny Street in early 2010. Soon word got around and there were lines of hungry pie eaters, including ex-pats from Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa. While many American customers also enjoyed the savory offerings, often people were shocked that the menu focused on beef, lamb, and chicken pies rather than blueberry or apple. Customers started asking for sweet pies, and soon Pacific Pie Co was also known for its amazing dessert options – including Chocolate Peanut Butter, Key Lime, Apple Sour Cream Struesel, and seasonal favorites like Marionberry and Peach Crumb pie. Sarah and Chris are committed to sourcing locally and sustainably, and have relationships with many farms including Lonely Lane Farm for 100% grass fed beef, SuDan farm for lamb, Eat Oregon First for lots of fantastic local meat and produce, as well as vegetable and fruit growers in the region. Pacific Pie Co continues to participate in several local farmer’s markets.

In May 2012 Sarah and Chris opened a much larger cafe and restaurant on SE 7th Ave (between Hawthorne and Clay), adding an expanded menu of side dishes and beer + wine to complement the sweet and savory pies. The new and improved Pacific Pie Co has become a neighborhood favorite for a quick lunch, happy hour, dinner with friends, or a place to chill at the bar and watch international sports like rugby and soccer. And of course Pacific Pie Co offers bike delivery through Portland Pedal Power!
