For those of you who absolutely love our local bagel shops, perhaps you’ve heard about the newest bagel shop on the block, Bowery Bagels. Since their opening (a couple weeks ago), Bowery Bagels and Portland Pedal Power have been working together to bring you handmade, custom crafted, bagel genius for lunch!  Currently housed next to Gilt on NW Broadway, Bowery Bagels is certainly setting a new standard for bagels in Portland.

Michael Madigan, the mastermind behind Portland’s well-known food incubator KitchenCru (twitter: @KitchenCru), has opened Bowery Bagels and CruMarket. His new dual-purpose storefront, located across the street from KitchenCru at 310 NW Broadway in Old Town Portland’s former Everett Hotel building, will house Portland’s premier New York-style bagel bakery meets sandwich shop along with an eclectic retail space featuring food products from local producers who work out of KitchenCru.

Brooklyn, N.Y. native Michael Madigan moved to Portland some 25 years ago and still he has yet to find a bagel as perfect as the ones he enjoyed every Sunday with his family. With a tweaked-to-perfection secret recipe, Bowery Bagels promises the city’s best bagels with delicious schmears and a full barista set up to boot. Everyday offerings will include eight bagels – plain, poppy, seasme, salt, pumpernickel, whole wheat, everything, and onion – and housemade schmears – plain, fine herbs, smoked salmon roasted vegetable and nutella. One-of-a-kind special bagels mimicking classic sweet and savory flavor combinations are also being developed including a truffle salt bagel with foie gras schmear and a miso soy ginger bagel with kimchee schmear. Lunch will include menu staple sandwiches as well as weekly specials – all made on bagels or fresh bread and topped with seasonal spreads and produce. All sandwiches will also be offered as salads, and the menu will round out with fresh soups and locally-produced pastries including cookies, macarons, gluten-free and vegan options. The retail space will exclusively feature an ever-growing selection of unique culinary products manufactured by the small businesses that utilize Madigan’s KitchenCru space – everything from sea salt, spice blends and sweets to crackers, condiments and chocolates.

The 800-square-foot space has a modern meets vintage vibe paying homage to the 1960’s New York bagel shops and bakeries and will even feature custom-made tile work reminiscent of the store’s namesake subway station in New York City. Mostly grab-and-go, limited seating will be available along the large windows in front. The new space is open seven days a week from 7:00am to 2:00pm.
