Bite the Big Apple With Bowery Bagels!

photo_deliveryA New York style bagel: Right off the bat, you might think it would be pretty difficult to find such a baked good around here. After all, Portland can’t get much farther away from the Big Apple.

How could Portland, Oregon, found about as far west of New York as you can get (About 3,000 miles worth!), create such a classic symbol of the metropolis?

Never fear, skeptical bagel connoisseur, for a hero appears within our very city! Bowery Bagels is Portland’s premier New York style bagel bakery and sandwich shop. The hand rolled bagels are boiled and then baked, resulting in an authentic, lightly crisp, chewy bagel.

Their bagels are particularly delicious with any of  Bowerys house made cream cheese schmears: plain, smoked salmon, fresh herb, roasted vegetable, BOM.com (bacon-onion-mushroom), and several vegan options.

They offer breakfast bagel sandwiches in the morning, and a delicious selection of lunch sandwiches, made from scratch soups, and salads. All the meats, sausages and bacon, are roasted and cured in our kitchen.

Make sure you start your morning off right, or get yourself pumped for a second wind at the office: Get yourself something delicious from Bowery. We take care of the hard work, and all you have to do is meet up with us, grab your meal, and get a taste of New York. Our Bowery-toting bikes have got your back.

Bowery Bagels: Advertising the Right Way

There’s something beautiful about symbiotic relationship. Whether it be the honeybee and the flower, the Clownfish and the Sea Anemone, or the Shark and Remora, partnerships between two parties can bring about some wonderful results. At Portland Pedal Power, we are very lucky to have quite a few partnerships that would even make a honeybee jealous.

Take for example our great relationship with Bowery Bagels! Bowery has been serving Portland since March of 2012, with with delicious bagels and schmears for sale at more than 80 retail locations. Once they opened their own storefront, Bowery reached out to PPP to fulfill their delivery needs and, as they say, the rest is history.

Citi Bank: Replacing the NY Taxi with Bicycles.

When you think of New York City, there are usually a set of images that come to mind. The Statue of Liberty, Central Park, 80s saxophone solos, traffic jams, and yellow taxis stuck in said jams. It’s a big city, and there’s a lot of people trying to get to their destination in a big East Coast hurry. Getting around in New York can be a hassle unless you’re willing to take the subway (scary), walk (tiresome), or take a bike (now we’re getting somewhere).

Biking had historically been non-existent in New York until the start of the CitiBike program. With that, CitiBank is starting to bring another common image to the table: six thousand blue bikes along with three hundred stations meant to help New Yorkers get around their crowded city.

The bikes have been gaining interest throughout the city. Bruce Willis, the man who patented walking away from explosions in slow motion, rode a CitiBike to the Letterman Show, Leonardo DiCaprio has been seen riding through the streets on one of the bikes, and Jon Stewart spent a portion of his show mocking critics of the program. Highlights from the Disaster Relief Trials

Ken DRTThe results are in, and it was a big win for Portland Pedal Power’s Ken Wetherell! Ken finished first in the Citizen Class in the 2nd Annual Disaster Relief Trials over the weekend, having tamed the course on his Surly Xtracycle.

Ken tackled the DRT course on his custom bike and conquered water obstacles and jersey walls all with the weight of two 3/4 full buckets of water from the Columbia River loaded on his bike. “While I did manage to finish first in the Citizen category, it’s important for me to acknowledge the excellent efforts of my fellow participants, the majority of whom had much heavier cargo bikes with greater capacity than mine,” Ken said. “Props also go out to the seven female competitors, including Diana Rempe, the fastest woman in the open category.”
