Bowls of the Gods from Kure Juice Bar. Heavenly!

You’re craving summer eats and we’ve got ’em! We deliver and cater from the best local spots, here’s a quick run down of some of our faves:

For a healthy cool pickup, order the aptly named and absolutely craveable Bowl of the Gods from Kure Juice Bar, along with any of their fresh juices or smoothies. For snacky meetings and events, we’ll bring you and your crew lush crudité trays and lunch platters from World FoodsZupans, or Green Zebra Grocery.

Fresh crudité trays from Zupans

If you’re in the mood for heartier fare, big meaty sandwiches from Charlie’s Deli never fail to satisfy. In Hawaii it is always summer so order mouth watering Kalua Pig plates from Ate-oh-Ate.

Get on the bowl bandwagon and order bowls of fresh goodness from Whole Bowl, Café Yumm! or Cha! Cha! Cha! As far as fresh and addictive goes, we are always craving the perfectly cooked chicken and rice with that ginger sauce from Nong’s Khao Man Gai. You know THAT ginger sauce. Pretty sure I’d like to pour that over everything I eat, forever.

Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without homemade local ice cream! Grab some ice cream sammies or specialty flavor tubs from Ruby Jewel.

Seize the summer and get it delivered by bike!

Pedalpalooza Strikes in June

CaptureGet Ready to Ride!

When I first moved to Portland I was charmed to the core by the creative and hyperactive bike scene. It is really unlike any city I’ve been to in this respect. Year round there are all kinds of bike events (the Midnight Mystery Ride, the Thursday Night Ride, Filmed by Bike Film Fest, Sunday night Zoobomb) but the month June is where it all blows up with Pedalpalooza. It’s time to tune up that cruiser and string some lights on your basket – the kickoff ride is June 9th!

Pedalpalooza is over three weeks of bike events and themed rides organized by community groups and individuals, and nearly all these events are free. If you are new to town, it is a great way to meet new people and check out the magical local bike scene. Check out the calendar, there is seriously something for everyone.

Bike rides run the gamut, from Fixies on Mt. Tabor to the High Heels ride, from Tom Waits to Lemmy, from the Full Moon to Solstice Ride. This year the Bowie vs. Prince ride is going to be EPIC, considering we lost them both this year. Last year the Champagne Ride was quite fabulous and merged nicely with the Dropout Prom ride, which ended in a midnight dance party along the Springwater Corridor trail.

The Rocky Butte Sunset Potluck Picnic Dance Party is also a lovely start of summer ride. Of course, the World Naked Bike Ride also happens June 25th, 8pm, for those of you looking to expose yourself to more of what Portland has to offer.

There’s nothing better than a party on two wheels. So get your gear, pack up a picnic, and get out and play — summer is coming!

Maximize Your Weekend, PDX

Hope to see you this weekend at Sunday Parkways!

Summer in Portland means patios, rivers, bikes, and beer. It means: get busy and get outside. This weekend Portland Pedal Power will be out in maximum, cruising our big bikes round a handful of hot summer happenings. On Saturday we will be hitting the Saturday Market and the Oregon Brewer’s Festival riverside at Waterfront Park. You can easily do both on Saturday and still have time to hit the PSU Farmers Market to shop for dinner (if you’re not too sauced!).

On Sunday, we’ll be riding the Sunday Parkways NE route in style with our Point West bikes. Sunday Parkways is an excellent event for the family or a daytime date and you’ll score lots of free stuff from vendors along the way. We will be stopping occasionally to hand out sunglasses and blinky bike lights to spread the word about the #DriveHope Campaign. There’s always a good smattering of yummy food cart options too.

Get your golf on at the Portland Classic, coming up

Summer in Portland also means planning ahead. Weekends fill up quick! We will be cruising all these events to help promote the upcoming Cambia Portland Classic, the longest-running non-major tournament on the LPGA tour, returning to Columbia Edgewater Country Club August 13-16. This will be the 44th year that the LPGA has come to Portland, and it’s getting better every year.

Last year some of Portland’s most iconic food carts were added, including KOi Fusion and Retrolicious, returning this year. The Craft Beer center will also return this year, featuring some of the Northwest’s best microbrews. The tournament promises to feature many of the worlds best golfers.

This year they’ve added the Portland Classic Sprint to the Green 5K, a race on the golf course prior to the final round on Sunday, August 16. Tickets for the event are available online at portlandclassic.com. Weekly passes are $25 and daily tickets are $10, and children 17 and under are free. All ticket proceeds go to charity.

Get crackin’ Portland! Summer doesn’t last forever!

Summer Cycling: Enjoying the Outdoors on Two Wheels

TREOAs summer rolls around, many people in Portland look for ways to enjoy themselves outdoors. Some take to hiking, others to swimming. We like to recommend cycling as a great way to get some exercise and burn off some energy, especially when it gets so nice outdoors.

Here are five reasons why you should consider taking up cycling during this summer and enjoy the beautiful summer weather we get to enjoy for the next few months:

Cycling is good for your muscles: If you’ve been on a bike for more than a few minutes, you should be familiar with a burning sensation in your legs. This is, of course, a good thing. Cycling is great for improving the muscles in your thighs, calves, and rear.

Cycling can help with joint conditions: Because cycling is considered a low-impact form of exercise, it can be especially beneficial for those who can’t take part in other higher impact exercises (jogging for example).

Cycling increases lifespan: Cycling has been linked to improving cardiovascular health, and drastically decreases your risk of heart disease. According to the British Medical Association, cycling just 20 miles a week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%. Discovery Magazine even writes cycling can improve your immune system, and has even shown evidence of fighting cancer. Even when adjusted for risk of injury, cycling has associate with increasing “life-years.”

Cycling improves the waistline: On an average ride, a cyclist will burn approximately 300 calories per hour. An average person will burn approximately 11 pounds of unhealthy fat per year, while building muscle mass and increasing metabolic rate.

Cycling improves mental health: While the physical health benefits are usually very apparent, few consider the mental benefits behind riding a bike. Bicycling has been proven to reduce stress and increase hand-eye coordination among those who choose to cycle a mere 30 minutes a day. The Journal of Occupational Health published an article showing cycling significantly improved mental health among those who choose to commute daily to work.

Some of these benefits may seem obvious, but it’s important to remember you can only take advantage of them if you choose to climb on the bike. The most important thing to remember is that this is an enjoyable experience! Get out and explore some of the fantastic bike trails Portland has to offer!

Come have Some Breakfast on the Bridges with Bowery Bagels

PortlandPedalPowerBikeBridgeEverybody loves Breakfast. It’s the meal that sets the stage for the whole day, so you gotta make it count. But sometimes, you have to cut breakfast short if you have a long commute, which means your breakfast might consist of whatever you can grab on the go.

So come enjoy a good breakfast this Friday! May 29th kicks off the first Breakfast on the Bridges, a great service hosted by the Shift community.

On the last Friday of every month during the summer season, Shift hands out pastries coffee, fruit, and sometimes even biscuits and gravy to cycling commuters crossing the bridges. Instead of rushing to get across the bridge, this event gives you a chance to stop for a minute, enjoy some good food, and take in the scenery from one of Portlands many bridges. This Friday, May 29th, you will find them on Steel bridge(esplanade east side), Hawthorne bridge (westbound off ramp), and Burnside bridge(east end, westbound) starting at 7:15 AM.

Portland Pedal Power will be there, so come say hi! We will have some delicious baked goods from Bowery Bagels, paired with some of their fantastic Schmears. This way, you can leave for the office on time AND enjoy a delicious breakfast before headed over the bridge. A great Breakfast with a great view of PDX. Couldn’t be better!

Enjoy Labor Day Weekend with Twist FroYo!

twistfroyoLabor Day Weekend has to be one of the most anticipated days of the summer. You get the nice heat, the fountains are running, your neighbors are cooking the soy brats, and you get one final chance to say, “Summer is awesome!”

That’s why Portland Pedal Power is promoting one of the most summer-y things of all: Twist FroYo! This Labor Day Weekend, come enjoy some of the best Frozen Yogurt in town! We’ll be hanging out at two of the coolest events this weekend, handing out delicious samples of Twist FroYo and hanging with all the cool kids. Come be one of those cool kids!

We’ll be relaxing at Wallace Park enjoying the Portland Film Festival on August 30th (this Saturday) watching Ping Pong Summer and enjoying the good weather. What goes together better than Frozen Yogurt and a movie? Not much, I tell you.

We’ll also be chillin’ at Art in the Pearl, named one of the top 10 Arts and Crafts Festivals in the country. The event lasts all weekend, and fills the Northwest Portland Park blocks with art, theater, music, and hands-on activities for people of all ages.

Kick Off This Summer Right and Take a Ride!

We did it, everyone! After enduring nine full months of misty mornings, torrential downpours, and bad weather to make this history books (I mean for goodness sake, our Worst Day of the Year ride was cancelled because it was the worse than our typical worst day of the year!) I think it’s safe to admit summer is finally here! We can finally put our shorts on and enjoy that bright orb in the sky.

It’s about time we get to enjoy some good weather, and we want to make sure you get the most out of it. Get out there and ride this summer! Here are a few places you can enjoy the sights and scenery unique to our corner of the world:

The Springwater Corridor Trail features some of the local wetlands and wildlife still found in the PDX area. The trail itself intertwines with Johnson Creek and has more than ten bridges crossing the water! Johnson Creek is credited as one of the last free flowing bodies of water in the Portland metro area.

The Southeast Neighborhood Trail takes you on a 13 mile loop throughout the historic southeast Portland neighborhoods and along the Willamette. The trail has very few inclines, and follows low-traffic roads, bike lines, and off street paths, ensuring you can enjoy the ride a little more. Take a look at the City of Portland’s trail map to get an idea of where the trail will take you.
