Five Tips When Ordering Food for Your Office

If you’re regularly tasked with ordering individual meals or catered lunches for events at your office, you’re responsible for keeping a lot of people satisfied. We’ve compiled five tips to help you keep the team happy and minimize your stress when ordering food.

  1. Order Early

Nothing throws a wrench in a restaurant’s operations like a late order they’re trying to squeeze in. The reality is good restaurants are doing as much, if not more, business with their delivery partners than their in-house customers. Traditional kitchens are not designed with this kind of volume in mind, and it can quickly overload the staff.

If possible, order 2-5 days in advance and schedule your food to be delivered on the early side of your lunch window. That way you won’t get stuck behind last minute orders, or an in-house rush of customers.

  1. Get Your Food From One Vendor Who Can Accommodate All of Your Dietary Needs

One-stop shopping for office vegans, celiacs, and those with food allergies, helps on multiple levels. First, it cuts your workload. Second, it helps with accurate labeling and answering any questions you may have after the food has been delivered. Third, if the restaurant is running ahead or behind schedule, all of the food will show up at one time. Few things are more stressful than having food for only some of your hungry co-workers. We deliver BEER! You have to vote for us!

If you’ve worked with us, you know that Portland Pedal Power is unlike any other delivery service you’ve used. Not only do we deliver food by bike, we deliver it fast and friendly. (I would argue we can move through the dense urban core much quicker than any gassed up vehicle circling for curbspace!) PPP is the only homegrown on-demand delivery that is run entirely by bike. Above all, we prioritize superior customer service. You can always get a PPP staffer on the phone.

We’ve worked hard to build strong relationships with the restaurants and markets we work with. We know what they can get you, how much time they’ll need, and how delicious it will be. Our riders are full-time and not contractors, we know the city and its yumminess firsthand.

Annnnnd…Portland Pedal Power is committed to making a difference in delivery with more than just delicious food. Delivering food by bike reduces congestion and C02 emissions on our busy downtown streets. Kalé: The Ultimate Japanese Comfort Food in PDX

I’ll be honest, when I think “Japanese Food,” the first thing that comes to mind is sushi. But did you know sushi doesn’t come close to the most common food you would find in a Japanese home? Makoto Yoshino knew we were all missing out on one of the best meals Japan gets to enjoy, and set out to change that.

That’s why we are very happy to deliver for Kalé, a Portland Restaurant serving a traditional Japanese dish you are going to absolutely love! Check out their video to learn a little bit about Kalé:

Kalé is a Japanese comfort food, dating all the way back to the year 1863, where Hiizu Miyake discovered the dish during a trip to Europe. Because of this history, it has traditionally been considered a European dish. During the last 100 years, it has gained popularity in Japan that it is now considered a national dish, developing into many different forms.

PPP Partners with Dinner Delivery Specialist Dine In 2Nite

Right on the tails of our new prepared take-home dinner program, Portland Pedal Power has teamed up with east side dinner delivery chef service, Dine In 2Nite. After launching his business in early 2012, owner David Baer was certain his new subscription dinner delivery service would appeal to singles, seniors, new parents, and pretty much every busy person in Portland who wanted to improve their dinnertime routine.  And while his inner east side clients have grown steadily over the year-and-a-half he’s been in business, his operation was too small to handle the added demand of beckoning consumers downtown and in the Pearl District.

That’s where we came in. After months of turning away inquiries from hungry professionals looking for better options for getting a decent, affordable dinner after a long day’s work, Dine In 2Nite contacted PPP to help expand their reach. (more…)

Long Live Cargo Bikes!

Disaster Relief TrialsCargo Bikes will be in the spotlight at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry this Saturday, July 13th, as the second annual Disaster Relief Trials and the inaugural Cascadia Cargo Bike Fair star at OMSI’s Sustainable Transportation Expo.

The Disaster Relief Trials (DRT) puts cargo bikes and their riders through a simulation of a major natural disaster during which fuel is in short supply and emergency vehicles are unable to access major roads and bridges. Last year, 30 competitors took part in the DRT, which used Velo Cult Bicycles in NE Portland as its command center, but the scope is much bigger in 2013. The field has been increased to 40 riders, with the addition of a category for electric-assist bikes, who will set out on a 30-mile course that will “demonstrate and challenge the cargo bike’s capabilities in a disaster response situation.”

Guest Blog: Living City & Handmade Gardens

Garden 1This is a guest blog written by Rachel Freifelder of Living City and Handmade Gardens. We connected with Rachel through Portland Society, a nonprofit business alliance of professional women who are passionate about bicycling in Portland.

It is mid-January and the weather has been truly wintry. The memories of the mild fall, the late frost-date, fade so quickly when freezing fog slicks the streets and fingertips burn with cold! The sunshine is, of course, a welcome tradeoff for the dip in temperatures. I linger in it this afternoon, admiring the thin, yellow light slanting over the brave, sturdy vegetables still thriving in the garden.

Meet Addy, owner of Addy’s Sandwiches!

So for those of you who have faithfully followed for some time, you know we love Addy’s Sandwich Bar!  Addy’s Sandwich Bar is a phenomenal food cart on the corner of 10th and Alder that has resided in that spot for the past three years. Addy has a charming personality and an infectious smile, so she’s great to visit on a gloomy day!  If you’ve not read why we love Addy’s sandwiches so much, you can refer back to any of our previous Addy’s blogs.

Last you saw Addy’s sandwiches on our blog, you likely read that she is the first to purchase Portland Pedal Power’s Pyxis, our awesome one of a kind bike enclosure that’s awesome for food delivery in Portland! But don’t take it from us, take it from Addy herself. Addy was gracious enough to sit down with us again, and chat with us on camera about her great business and how the PPP Pyxis has helped her business move forward and expand! Without further ado, meet Addy!

Weekend to-dos: Roll with the Big Dogs!

Do you love dogs?  Of course you do, because you live in Portland Oregon, one of the friendliest dog cities in the country.  As a matter of fact, we’re so friendly we have K-9 cafe’s, bakeries, and even restaurants and pubs built around bringing your furry friend along for a nice sit down meal and perhaps a drink. (Hopefully for you and not the dog).  One of these fantastic Portland pubs is the Lucky Labrador Brewery, where man, woman, and their best friends can enjoy a nice adult beverage together, without one of the three being tied to a post.

This weekend the Lucky Labrador Brewery is hosting the Tour de Lab, a 19 or 40 mile Portland bicycle tour of all 4 of the Lucky Lab brew pubs, in support of DoveLewis animal hospital.  Festivities include (but not limited to) a pre-ride party Saturday (Sept. 8 ) from 2pm-4pm at the Lucky Lab off SE Hawthorne. Then Sunday fun day (Sept. 9)  with so much room for activities including a costume contest, rest stops with food, and of course good brews as you visit each of the locations. Be aware though, make sure you go on the correct ride.  There is the “Puppy Ride” which is a nice 19 mile ride visiting 3 of the Lucky Lab locations, and then there’s the “Big Dog” ride.  The Big Dog ride covers 40 hilly miles and visits all 4 Lucky Lab locations.  Regardless of the path you choose, there’s a nice hot dog and cold frothy brew awaiting you at the finish line.

You can still register here, and you might just get a chance to see one of your favorite food delivery riders along the way!

What’s for lunch? Bowery is the New Bagels on the block!

For those of you who absolutely love our local bagel shops, perhaps you’ve heard about the newest bagel shop on the block, Bowery Bagels. Since their opening (a couple weeks ago), Bowery Bagels and Portland Pedal Power have been working together to bring you handmade, custom crafted, bagel genius for lunch!  Currently housed next to Gilt on NW Broadway, Bowery Bagels is certainly setting a new standard for bagels in Portland.

Michael Madigan, the mastermind behind Portland’s well-known food incubator KitchenCru (twitter: @KitchenCru), has opened Bowery Bagels and CruMarket. His new dual-purpose storefront, located across the street from KitchenCru at 310 NW Broadway in Old Town Portland’s former Everett Hotel building, will house Portland’s premier New York-style bagel bakery meets sandwich shop along with an eclectic retail space featuring food products from local producers who work out of KitchenCru.
