Guest Blog: Living City & Handmade Gardens

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Garden 1This is a guest blog written by Rachel Freifelder of Living City and Handmade Gardens. We connected with Rachel through Portland Society, a nonprofit business alliance of professional women who are passionate about bicycling in Portland.

It is mid-January and the weather has been truly wintry. The memories of the mild fall, the late frost-date, fade so quickly when freezing fog slicks the streets and fingertips burn with cold! The sunshine is, of course, a welcome tradeoff for the dip in temperatures. I linger in it this afternoon, admiring the thin, yellow light slanting over the brave, sturdy vegetables still thriving in the garden.

Meet Addy, owner of Addy’s Sandwiches!

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

So for those of you who have faithfully followed for some time, you know we love Addy’s Sandwich Bar!  Addy’s Sandwich Bar is a phenomenal food cart on the corner of 10th and Alder that has resided in that spot for the past three years. Addy has a charming personality and an infectious smile, so she’s great to visit on a gloomy day!  If you’ve not read why we love Addy’s sandwiches so much, you can refer back to any of our previous Addy’s blogs.

Last you saw Addy’s sandwiches on our blog, you likely read that she is the first to purchase Portland Pedal Power’s Pyxis, our awesome one of a kind bike enclosure that’s awesome for food delivery in Portland! But don’t take it from us, take it from Addy herself. Addy was gracious enough to sit down with us again, and chat with us on camera about her great business and how the PPP Pyxis has helped her business move forward and expand! Without further ado, meet Addy!

Weekend to-dos: Roll with the Big Dogs!

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

Do you love dogs?  Of course you do, because you live in Portland Oregon, one of the friendliest dog cities in the country.  As a matter of fact, we’re so friendly we have K-9 cafe’s, bakeries, and even restaurants and pubs built around bringing your furry friend along for a nice sit down meal and perhaps a drink. (Hopefully for you and not the dog).  One of these fantastic Portland pubs is the Lucky Labrador Brewery, where man, woman, and their best friends can enjoy a nice adult beverage together, without one of the three being tied to a post.

This weekend the Lucky Labrador Brewery is hosting the Tour de Lab, a 19 or 40 mile Portland bicycle tour of all 4 of the Lucky Lab brew pubs, in support of DoveLewis animal hospital.  Festivities include (but not limited to) a pre-ride party Saturday (Sept. 8 ) from 2pm-4pm at the Lucky Lab off SE Hawthorne. Then Sunday fun day (Sept. 9)  with so much room for activities including a costume contest, rest stops with food, and of course good brews as you visit each of the locations. Be aware though, make sure you go on the correct ride.  There is the “Puppy Ride” which is a nice 19 mile ride visiting 3 of the Lucky Lab locations, and then there’s the “Big Dog” ride.  The Big Dog ride covers 40 hilly miles and visits all 4 Lucky Lab locations.  Regardless of the path you choose, there’s a nice hot dog and cold frothy brew awaiting you at the finish line.

You can still register here, and you might just get a chance to see one of your favorite food delivery riders along the way!

What’s for lunch? Bowery is the New Bagels on the block!

Friday, July 6th, 2012

For those of you who absolutely love our local bagel shops, perhaps you’ve heard about the newest bagel shop on the block, Bowery Bagels. Since their opening (a couple weeks ago), Bowery Bagels and Portland Pedal Power have been working together to bring you handmade, custom crafted, bagel genius for lunch!  Currently housed next to Gilt on NW Broadway, Bowery Bagels is certainly setting a new standard for bagels in Portland.

Michael Madigan, the mastermind behind Portland’s well-known food incubator KitchenCru (twitter: @KitchenCru), has opened Bowery Bagels and CruMarket. His new dual-purpose storefront, located across the street from KitchenCru at 310 NW Broadway in Old Town Portland’s former Everett Hotel building, will house Portland’s premier New York-style bagel bakery meets sandwich shop along with an eclectic retail space featuring food products from local producers who work out of KitchenCru. Portland Pedal Power has a new look!

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

If you’ve seen any of our riders lately, you may have noticed something different about them.  Perhaps you thought it was a new haircut.  Maybe you were thinking that our riders had shaved or done something new with their eyebrows.  Perhaps it was bike or the helmets they’re sporting.  Then it more than likely hit you like a train using presto logs from Back to the Future II.  ”Those jerseys are freakin’ sweet!”  That’s right faithful followers of the bicycle delivery warriors, Portland Pedal Power has new uniforms and they are sexy!

Rider Colin says – “comfortable, don’t know that you are wearing it until someone comments how sharp and professional you look’, plus they have convenient pocket for delivery slips.”

Rider Fitz says about the jerseys – “‘…shirts are very breathable. Love the feel and receive so many compliments”

These beautifully made, custom designed Canari jerseys are courtesy of, and sponsored by, Bicyclinghub.com!  You may have

Fitz rockin' the Canari Jersey

heard mention of Bicyclinghub.com some months ago when we told you about their Winter Sale.  Hopefully you were able to catch a bargain during their sale.  If not, go to their website and keep an eye out for amazing deals and upcoming sales.  For a little more about Bicyclinghub.com, they were founded in 2002 and ship products across the US and around the world.  They are a fantastic place to go for bicycling jerseys, bib shorts, cycling shorts, and other bicycling gear.  We highly recommend checking them out!  They’re PPP approved!

Oh Alberta!

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

So if you read this blog a lot, you may notice that for the past couple of months we’ve mentioned Last Thursday a number of times. It’s not that we’re marketing for Last Thursday, it’s just so freakin’ cool!  As advocates of everything Portland (hence the Portland Pedal Power), we feel that Last Thursday represents the diverse aspects of Portland quite well, so obsessing over this event seems to fall right into our business plan. Now I can imagine that the majority of you readers have experienced, frequented, and even participated in Last Thursday on Alberta. For those that haven’t, we’d like to give you a very small taste of what you’re missing out on here.  Now keep in mind it is a street walk for art of all kind, small businesses to sell and promote their products, and unique foods and drinks to be pushed to the masses.  Alberta’s last Thursday has helped to raise awareness for the art community and local businesses and co-ops alike. As you pass through you may see:

One of the nation’s top Taiko performances!

Portland has some of the best Taiko in the nation.  More often than not you will be able to catch these amazing Taiko performances on any given last Thursday.  Taiko is Japanese for “drum” and was historically used as a war drum to either deliver marching cadences or call out orders and announcements.  Modern day Taiko was established in 1951 by a Japanese Jazz drummer named Daihachi Oguchi.  Since it’s origin, other pioneers had emerged and Taiko was spread throughout Japan via radio and the rest is history… that you’ll have to look up, like we did.

Street Jelly Fish!

As I stated before, this is an event for art and expression of all kinds.  These were two wonderfully spirited hippies of old with a vision of jelly fish walking the streets of Alberta, flowing through the crowds as though they are a vast sea of fish.  I’m sure no drugs were involved (recently).  As you peruse through Alberta, whether it’s last Thursday or not, you always chance running into all forms of creatures that you would typically only see in an ocean, zoo, or circus.  We highly encourage you, when you see these creatures, to not make eye contact, but simply partake in their activity and do as they do as to best blend in.

You may see a Rocky Mountain Horror show

So one of the wonderful things about this city is it’s appreciation for cult films and all things slightly strange.  So if you haven’t seen a Rocky Mountain Horror Show you are likely missing out on some of the best Portland has to offer.  More often than not you have the privilege of seeing such a show in a movie theater like the Clinton, where they show it fairly regularly.  Yet if you hate the theater you could possibly catch an all too live showing on Alberta.   The actors in this group I’m sure perform other pieces, but I can imagine the Rocky Mountain Horror Show being their most highly demanded.

Japanese Port-o-potty!

Now obviously this is not a port-o-potty from Japan, otherwise it would have a shower toilet seat on it with a warmer and some disinfectant spray posted up on the port-o-potty walls to wipe down the seat with.  No, this is Japanese in an entertainment sense.  You’ve likely seen these port-o-potties if you were watching the Taiko show or eating some new Paleo diet style foods at ‘Cultured Caveman‘.  These special portable toilets are decorated with a bamboo curtain draped over the door and pictures of various Japanese people posted all around the walls, as well as Manga, cosplay, and all other things that Japan is well-known for, but less expected!  Personally, we will never use any other port-o-potty again.  This is the only one for us.

Unique Foods from Unique vendors

So being Portland Pedal Power and all, you were probably wondering, “Where are the freakin’ bikes?!”  Well that’s a future post, but in the mean time we did find this amazing fete of ingenuity and kettle corn!  The Pedal Kettle was a food vendor after our own 21 speed hearts, sporting a full kettle corn cooking setting up on a customized bicycle.  This is just an example of the unique foods and vendors that you will find.  You can find food carts with foods from all over the world.  From Ethiopia to the Mediterranean to Mexico to ‘Merican! That’s not even including the craft brewed beers and especially Kombucha!  Careful drinking this Kombucha though, we found out the hard way that the alcohol content is much higher in these home brewed batches, which may and has actually resulted in varying levels of healthy intoxication.

Bands of all kinds playing in the streets

Perhaps the most prevalent and enjoyable part of Last Thursday is the abundance of music as you saunter along the street of Alberta.  Everybody with a mic, a guitar, and a speaker plugs-in, tunes up, and entertains away in this eclectic art fair.  We enjoyed large ska bands, amazing marching bands, percussion bands, solo rap artists, and R&B singers serenading young women as they passed by their claimed corner.  The greatest part is, the majority of music you see on the street of Last Thursday is better than that last show which you likely paid $20 dollars for entry.  As with any form of music, you get those who live freely enough in their own skin to skip, hop, jump, and dance around in front of the band living life as if for that moment, life could not be any sweeter.

So for those of you who love all things Portland, here is a great place to be overwhelmed with Portlandish activities and items.

Click for more pictures of our enclosures

You’ve seen them all around town.  Perhaps you’ve noticed them on your way to work.  Maybe you were taking a walk downtown.  You may have pulled up next to one on your bicycle and thought “man, wouldn’t that be convenient?!”  Well now you can own one yourself!  That’s right, Portland Pedal Power is selling our self-designed, custom made, unique bicycle enclosures that we use for food delivery, product delivery, and visually appealing marketing for our businesses.  We don’t mean the blue prints and designs either!  We mean the fully assembled enclosures right out of the shop! (Specs at the bottom)

Since putting our enclosures in service, they have been gaining more and more recognition not only through out Portland, but internationally as well.  There have been a flood of inquiries about the design, the specs, and whether or not we are selling these unique monsters of convenience and innovation.  We’ve finally decided to unleash the design out into the world.  The enclosure is designed to work with most cargo bicycles and can easily carry loads as heavy as a cargo bicycle’s maximum capacity. Boasting a combination of a spacious interior and the ability to post large, eye-catching signs on the exterior, these enclosures are a great purchase for any business aiming for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly business model as well as a way to promote their own business visually using grass roots marketing techniques.

A little bit of history about the enclosures, these enclosures were designed by PPP founder Ken Wetherell and were really thestarting point for Portland Pedal Power.  Portland Pedal Power was born out of People’s Food Co-op in 1997, where Ken was once a volunteer at the produce stand.  At the time that Ken was volunteering at the co-op there began talks of expanding the store due to high sales, but not everybody was on board with the idea.  So Ken began to brainstorm with the head produce buyer and thought to create a bicycle delivery service for the co-op where people can order their food and have it delivered to them.  So 3 of the staff members of the co-op did a pilot program in Fall of ’97 and received tremendous support.  Unfortunately they couldn’t have too many customers due to bicycle capacity, but regardless the support was there and abundant.  As Ken decided to take this program to the heart of the Portland, he wanted to bring bicycle-based delivery to small companies as a way to promote the company’s services.  He had the idea to use a trailer to carry deliveries, and as time had passed, that trailer morphed into the bicycle enclosures we see today.
A few benefits of our design:

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Alright so let’s step away from food for a moment and discuss a very serious issue.  Shoes.  Personally, we’re very big fans of the shoes we buy, so much so that we wear them until they take on a life of their own and begin to talk while we walk.  Considering how much we take the heel-toe express when we’re not on our bikes, working order shoes are fairly important, and worked in comfy working order shoes are the best of all of them.  Not to mention having functional riding shoes is very important for our Portland Pedal Power riders to bring you food delivery.  So for those of you who truly enjoy their shoes the same as we do, we’ll let you in on one of Portland’s best kept secrets, 4th Ave. Shoe Repair and Keys.
