Small But Mighty: Green Zebra Grocery

Capture

Lovely produce at Green Zebra

Just in time for Earth Day, Green Zebra Grocery has its grand opening today for their Lloyd District location. Green Zebra is a full-service grocery store in a small footprint, for neighborhood convenience and quality. I really love this idea and wish there were more markets like it. Reason being: I get easily overwhelmed in the oversized big box grocery stores of today (WHERE is the toothpaste? Where is it?? Aisle 57? Ahhhhhhh!).

So for people like me, who don’t have a car and prefer to shop weekly instead of purchasing giant pallets of dried spaghetti as if preparing for the apocalypse, this is my kind of market. They focus on curating their stock to emphasize healthy, local, and sustainable produce and products. It is also just plain smart to build smaller, local markets in dense mixed-use environments like Lloyd — areas that are walkable and convenient.

Healthy convenience – Get it catered direct!

The Lloyd location also has an added bonus with their ZeBar, where you can pull up a chair and enjoy craft beer or cider or pick up a growler fill. They also have kombucha taps, because, well, of course they do! Green Zebra gives careful consideration to every product in their store. Deli food is cooked from scratch at each location. From fresh brewed coffee to lush salad bar to grass fed beef and sustainable seafood, if they don’t have it, you probably don’t need it.

PPP is now offering delivery and catering from Green Zebra, check out their online menu and order direct — from breakfast goodies to awesome cheese and charcuterie platters. We are super excited about their new location and our partnership!

Escaping the grains with HomeGrown Bakery!

slider1Portland Pedal Power loves partnering with businesses that make healthy ingredients their top priority. That’s one of the reasons we love working with HomeGrown Bakery! Take a look at why how HomeGrown Bakery creates healthy treats without sacrificing taste:

HomeGrown Bakery is baking delicious grain free pastries right out of Portland Oregon. We use our own blend of only coconut and almond flour that’s packed with protein. Our ingredients are naturally gluten free, grain free & dairy free. Many other gluten free flour substitutes are nutrition-less and empty.

We use local organic honey and occasionally coconut sugar, instead of refined sugars or agave. We are local in Portland, Oregon and we try and keep our product that way, using ingredients closest to us whenever possible.

Why Shift to a Grain-Free / Paleo Diet?

slider2Eating a grain-free / Paleo diet is the elimination of all grains including wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye and oats from your diet. People with Celiac, wheat allergies or other digestive conditions have difficulty tolerating these grains. Many people find that they need to eliminate all grains from their diet to feel better. People following a paleo diet eat more nutritional foods such as fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

Thousands of people worldwide are experiencing significant relief or improvement from many conditions including: Crohn’s disease, chronic fatigue, epilepsy, Autism, arthritis, ADD, Schizophrenia, auto-immune disorders, Metabolic Syndrome X, insulin resistance and many more illnesses and disorders.

Improvements from above conditions have been noted possible by eliminating grains and sugars from your diet.

Be sure to take a look at our menu and try some of HomeGrown Bakery’s delicious Paleo Pastries:

Paleo Banana Bread – Made from bananas, honey, coconut flour, almond flour, eggs, coconut oil, coconut flakes, baking soda, and salt

Pastini Pastaria Partners with PPP!

Pastini PastariaPastini Pastaria, Portland’s Italian restaurants with a passion for pasta, have joined Portland Pedal Power’s list of eateries delivered by bike. Pastini’s name references the small, neighborhood bistros of Italy that serve a variety of pastas, and Pastini indeed offers a large selection of the noble noodle in authentic, made-from-scratch dishes.

Pastini started as a tiny restaurant in Irvington and has added locations downtown, on NW 23rd, and in SE Portland. But, while they’ve grown up over the last 11 years, they have stayed true to their roots by partnering with many locals farmers and suppliers like Pearl Bakery, Portland Roasting Coffee and Classic Foods, their supplier for artisan fresh pastas. And they’ve also stayed true to a philosophy of making all their own sauces, pestos, dressings and desserts, as well as making each dish to order. This means that every pasta, salad, sandwich and tiramisu is made from scratch with fresh, local ingredients and tastes like it!
